After a long restful summer break from school and the hustle and bustle of classrooms, lessons and teaching, we teachers were provided with a perspective seminar on the 28th of May. A light yet thought provoking session conducted by ex- Patrician turned Corporate trainer, Mr. Craig Gonzalves accompanied by his mother, a retired Patrician teacher and mentor Mrs. Avril Gonzalves.
The brief half-day was well spent with inspiring stories and instances that reminded us of our need for a change in perspective. Sometimes, we teachers, tend to forget that we are bestowed with the most powerful task of inspiring children who come to school to learn. Not just academic learning of which we may be experts. But, social, moral and psychological learning, of which we ourselves need guidance and adjustment in.
Hence, the session with Craig, opened our minds to what we were taking for granted, the shift in our vision. Craig, enlightened us about our intentions. We tend to forget the objective is to build ourselves and the children entrusted to us, as opposed to focusing on flaws and breaking down others. Everyone is unique to their task at hand and the key is to focus on the best way to accomplish complete overall growth for both the students and us teachers.
The session was filled with ice- breakers and games that kept us on our toes and Craig explained the purpose behind each activity. Wonderfully fun group activities that had us laughing while participating and pensive in conclusion. We were reminded by that we teachers are visualised as super hero's by our students and that's why we need to remember our super powers of love and compassion and forget our human flaws of pride, ego, jealousy, selfishness and laziness. Remembering that unless we excel and aspire for near perfection can we inspire excellence among our students. After all we teachers are the sculptors of the future.
